Butler's late bucket propels No. 10 Marquette past Georgetown

02/21/2009 - Washington, DC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jimmy Butler's bucket with 54.4 seconds left opened up a margin Marquette was able to hold, as the 10th-ranked Golden Eagles struck a blow to Georgetown's at-large hopes with a 78-72 victory at the Verizon Center.

Three of Marquette's big four did most of the damage, as Wesley Matthews scored 23 -- 18 in the first half -- Jerel McNeal tallied 22 points with seven assists and six rebounds and Lazar Hayward added a double-double with 17 points and 11 boards. Dominic James could afford an off night with just six points as the Golden Eagles (23-4, 12-2 Big East) won their third straight after a two-game skid.

Chris Wright led Georgetown with 17 points, Austin Freeman added 16, Greg Monroe 13 and eight boards and DaJuan Summers 12 points before he fouled out late. The Hoyas (14-11, 5-9) have lost three of four and need to right the ship quickly to make the tournament -- the Big East tournament that is, as just 12 teams will reach the conference tournament at Madison Square Garden.

Jessie Sapp's only points on a three-pointer and Hayward's three just before the horn capped an entertaining first half at 44-44.

Monroe scored four consecutive points to begin the second half and the edge reached 52-47 on a Summers jumper four minutes in. Marquette scored the next six to grab the lead, and the score remained tight right to the end.

Five straight points from Matthews handed the Golden Eagles a 63-59 advantage, and the edge increased to 67-61 on Butler's layup near the five-minute mark. Georgetown pulled within 71-67 on Wright's two shots from the charity stripe with 3:19 to go, but neither team scored again to Butler's big bucket with just over 54 seconds left.

Marquette held on for the victory from there.

Game Notes

Marquette shot 49.2 percent from the floor, while Georgetown made 50.9 percent of its shots...The Golden Eagles converted on 8-of-22 three-pointers, while the Hoyas connected on 8-of-18...The teams have now split eight lifetime meetings.
